i've been reading all the posts here and other websites, and i have been trying to figure out why the society/elders want control of people's lives.
they don't ask for contributions at the kingdom hall, and as a general rule, jw's aren't wealthy people, so what do you all think is the motivating factor behind the control issue?

this is the standard accusation placed on those that were stumbled by the countless failed date settings of the society.

I have read books on mind control techniques and this is just another way to keep the membership in check. They are using fear tactics and even myself still to this day have some guilt feelings about what the WT told me. I was raised as a JW and because of their early mind control, it will always be somewhat with me for the rest of my life. I just have to find others that can understand what I have gone through to appreciate where I have been. I once posed that question to an elder about the 1975 failed prediction and I was surprised he admitted it and said "well we did make mistakes". I responded by saying "What does that do to a person faith and confidence in that organization?"

i studied with the jws for a number of years and i found that on your doorstep they were the friendliest people in the world, but the firsrt time i stepped into the kh, with the exception of a few they didn't want to know!!!!!!!!!
i sat on a chair alone for the whole of most meetings, sometimes i even had a whole row to myself.. i then began to realise that i was only a statistic on a monthly report card.
in other words if someone was pioneering or it was raining they only had to come and see me to make their hours up.. question the blood issue and they will walk past your house with their heads down and push your magazines through the letter box when they know you are out to avoid seeing you.. i love my family, but according to the jws my lovely husband, my children and my grandaughter who i love more than life itself have no chance in the new system.
What is truth?? The WT does not even know what truth is because they are always changing their concept of what truth is year to year and month to month...

i spoke to my jw mum yesterday evening.
i told her all about george, the jw who has decided to make my pub his watering hole.
i told her that he was on the verge of being banned for his loudness and his appalling rudeness to the landlady.
I have met my share of kooks in the Borg to. My ex brother in law was an elder and thought it was his duty to bring the most dysfunctional people I have ever met home. Makes one wonder that at the time, they had a young family and some of the men he used to bring home I won't have trusted them around a dog let alone small children.
Also what’s with the sisters?? I have a friend that dated a JW women a year ago. He had only talked to her for a few weeks and already she was ready to get hitched. As it goes, he told her to be patient and get to know one another better for at least 6 months, then they would be in a better postion to decide weather they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. As it goes she was a bossy b**** and want him to change to her idea of a "good JW" ass kisser. She was also very opinionated on how he should raise his children but yet her children were all disfuntional and DF'd at one time or another. Also she had a lot of personal problems that he felt she should deal with first before they decided to get in a relationship. It would have been a few years but she was in such a big hurry. Makes one wonder because she already had two losers of husbands and she told him how she rushed into those marriages. Well he didn't want anything to do with this so they decided to break up after a few months. That was last April or May. I just heard she was already married this last November!! My friend got an email last fall from her and he said he didn't believe that she was really happy. It makes one wonder that she was getting ready for her big day she should have been thrilled and excited about it. Most JW's get married for the wrong reasons. They get married either for sex or for convenience but I put all the blame on the WT and their narrow minded thinking.
What’s with that?? Are all JW brothers and sisters that insecure about themselves?? One thing I have learned after breaking free from the Borg is to love myself first. That no one person or anything in this world that can bring you true happiness but yourself.

here's the kicker, he claims to be a lieutenant in a u.s. navy intelligence unit, basically a spy who knew in advance about 9-11.. in his affidavit, he says he tried to warn canadian intelligence about possible terrorist attacks on new york and the pentagon, along with targets in ottawa and toronto, but was written off as a petty criminal.
so he wrote the warning on a piece of paper, sealed it in an envelope, and handed it to jail guards a month before the attacks.
I tend to believe that maybe they had warnings of a terrorist attack but 1) The US was over confident and didn't think the terrorist could do it and 2) Even if they had an idea of an attack but didn't have specific details , Where do you begin to look?? I believe this was the case. Every one always wants to jump on the conspiracy theory i.e. Kennedy, Martin Luther King assassination etc. After 9-11 I heard experts on TV saying they had been warning of terrorists attacks for years but weren't taken seriously.

I have to say that I have met both good and wonderful elders that remember that they are a human first and treat you with respect and dignity. I believe these elders mean well but are stuck and blinded by the organization. Then on the other side I have met my share of elders that is self seeking, egotistic, power hungry and treats everyone one with contempt. They don't care that we are a humans and have our strength and weaknesses. The only thing I question is that if the JW's are really spirit directed, how can they appoint these type of individuals to represent their "Divine organization"?

i'm not old enought to remmeber 1975 but with the gulf war a lot of people got scared and believed the end was coming ( including me).. werent we doing the revelation book at the time?.
I remember our family studying with a sister in about 1967/68. At that time the WT had a few articles about the urgency of the time and hinted to 1975 as being a marked year. I recall how she emphasized that we would not see gradation. She is now dead buried and forgotten years ago..
In the early 70's I was studying with a brother that every study he would look at us and say, "When are you going to get baptized?" He again would emphasize the importance of pioneering etc, He would try to scare us by saying, "You think you are going to graduate in this system?" He was a harsh alcoholic and hasn't had anything to do with the Borg since the late 70's.
My ex father in law in the late 80's would say to me, "You know that generation that seen 1914 is almost gone? How many more years do you think you have to play around in this system? etc. Him and his wife have not attended the meetings for the last 5 to 10 years now....
Now to my last and favorite ex brother in law...NOT I recall visiting him and he liked to watch the news. Oh well you know almost every news item that would show a war or some natural disaster etc. He would right away say, "Well you know that’s it, this system can't last another year." I wish I had a dollar for every time he predicted the end of this system. He was the type of guy that would put in pioneer hours, give wonderful public talks and was a good elder brother... Well he would also physically and mentally abuse his family. Half of his kids don't want anything to do with the JW because of his example. My sister finally dumped him a few years ago, but I am sure he is right now banging on peoples doors and telling them how to live their lives...

i asked about something like this about 5 years ago, but could never get a straight answer.
seems you had to be part of a club.
whenever i did ask, the person(s) would kind of clam up.. funny, use our money to buy the cars and then they turn around and sell them.
This opens up another question as to how safe those building site really are. I know some of the quick builds I have seen there was so many people there that it couldn't have been too safe. Makes you wonder how many serious accidents have happened that have never been reported.
